No Fears - No Regrets

I wore new trail shoes for this race and the North downs way is extremely hilly. The directions were written notes but very acurate and most of the North downs way is well signposted and marked by trail acorns on posts. 10 of us met at 6am in Dunton green and the race was on... the first 30 miles were also extremely muddy, very soft under foot sometimes sinking way over ankle deep which made running hard work but the scenery as good. The race was non-supporting.. i.e you either provide own support crew or carry own supplies in ruck sack and reload at shops in picnic areas on route. I carried a rucsac with clothes, food and lots of drink. The terrain changed at 30 miles to very stony tracks and ground... my Davos shoes were designed for mud and the impact of the centre studs under the arch of foot taking all impact from landing on stones bruised the arches of my feet. Within a few miles my feet were really sore and applying pressure to the offending stud was felt immediately in the foot.... I had no choice but to retire at the 36.4 checkpoint where i informed the other runners support crew that I was going home... took out mobile phone, called taxi and caught train back to london to collect my car. took 2 weeks before right foot was recovered.. but scenery was nice although spent all time running on my own. |
