No Fears - No Regrets

Loch Tay is a huge deep cold water lake surrounded by mountains. It is a very beautiful location. The swim was a single triangle, 0.4 mile across from the boat house then 1 mile down the length of the lake and 1 mile back to the boat house. We started at 6am and there was a mist / fog on the water and the 32 competitors relied on the canoeists to guide the way to the buoys. Being a few feet out of the water, they could see ok. Once out of the water with very cold / numb feet and hands, it was a quick change and onto the cycle which was 2 laps of the loch, one side being up and down big hills with the other side being relatively flat. Once completed 2 laps, we were diverted a few miles through a neighbouring village and back to Aberfeldy to complete the full 112 mile cycle. This took 6H 30 mins, half an hour slower than Longest day, but then there were many big hills. Once off the bike, it was onto the run which was an undulating road from Aberfeldy down to the loch Tay and back. The run consisted of completing 2 laps of the course and to dismay discovered there were no refreshments apart form a few biscuits and water as they had used all the energy drinks at the cycle refreshment stops. This made the run very slow and hard, but after much ultra running I was able to jog slowly and with a poor time of almost 4 hours, I was amazed to find i had achieved the fourth fastest split for the run which made my finishing position quite respectable. |
