After over 5 inches of rain on Thursday 23rd July,
Friday started off cloudy but broke into sunshine in early evening.
The race was scheduled to start at 7pm and after
finding the location and setting up supplies in the car park next to car right
on the route where we exit from the timing chip lap counter, was ready to start.
Not having run much the previous weeks, I was planning
to just walk the whole event.. but as usual, once race started, I decided to run
at comfortable speed using GPS to try and keep a steady pace... which actually
worked. Ran the first marathon with all of the 5K laps between 28 mins and 29
mins.. no deviation. Then walked 1 lap after eating some food before running
through to 35 miles at the same pace. At 35 miles I ran out of energy, legs were
fine but no gas left in the tank so I walked through to 50 miles.
Was considering walking further but as this was first
Ultra for many years that I should settle for 50 and be happy to have no
blisters or sores etc.
The course was 5K lap around a lake, all on nice
paved sidewalks. there was virtually no incline or decline.. almost dead flat
all the way round. For some people this is good.. for others it is bad as you
end up using just one part of the muscle.
Met Hung and Heather who just came from Badwater Ultra
and we ran the first 35 miles at the same pace.. but Hung carried on to complete
113 miles.. just 2 weeks after doing Badwater..!!!
The race was very well organized, relaxed, friendly
with timing clock and chips for lap recording combined with a good refreshment
table for Power gel goo and Gatorade.
The weather was fairly cool with broken clouds during
the night.. and I finished an hour or 2 after sunrise where there was hardly a
cloud in the sky. A treat for this years summer which is one of the cloudiest /
wettest new England summers on record.
