FreshWater Fishing

My primary quarry when freshwater fishing has always been trout.. and after many years experience, have become fairly competent at catching with fly rod tying all my own flies and with spinner and shiners for areas which are not accessible by fly rod.

Below are an example catch from Wachussetts Reservoir MA, on the right are 2 wild lake trout and a Rainbow trout. The lake trout being 3 pounds in weight. The centre and left picture is of a 6 Pound 14 Ounce Lake trout caught from Wachussett reservoir on 15 April 2006.

First pic is 5 pound 9 Oz land locked Salmon caught on fly in Wachussett res tributary Nov 2014 during the Nov salmon run. State pin is 4lbs :-)

Wachussetts is drinking reservoir so no boats or wading allowed and there are some huge lake trout with the state record caught last year at over 25 pound in weight but rumor has it that the environmental agencies have caught and tagged 35+ pound fishes in this lake.

Below the picture are my Recent Freshwater Fishing Logs

Leaving Sunday afternoon so was 1st car in parking lot 6 am. Drift boats already floating through.. at 7am started fishing and hooked up twice with no result. So many people turned up.. it was mobbed.. drift boat anchored on corner i wanted to fish and saw them land 3 fish using float and egg sac. Fished close by and then walked down one of the smaller side branches.. past a big fallen tree..saw a fin and started casting in the pool underneath trees. Hooked and landed a small male. was maybe 3 pounds and easy to land.... then saw larger fish enter the hole and rest. After 10 or so casts, managed to hook up.. what a blast.. this fish was strong and ran all around this creek,, got her into a deep pool and focus on keeping her away from tree stumps hoping the hook would hold as she jumped and rolled. once getting tired, steered her to shallow gravel where she powered up onto the gravel.... let the smaller fish go.. he was perfectly fine on 25 ft leader and swam off upstream... then it was home for me with 3 steelhead tout in the cooler :-)

31 March 2012 Salmon River Pulaski NY 1 Steelhead Landed 10.5 Pound Male Steelhead

29 inches

After fishing all day and hooking up with many fish but not able to land any.. many break off due to 8 pound line chaffing on the rocks within few casts, damaged and not able to handle these fish.. increased line to 12 pounds. Number hits greatly reduced, but when hooked this 11 pound Steelhead in mouth.. it was game on. 30 secs after hooking fish, drift boat came through.. had to dip rod tip under water and fish went crazy running upstream... upstream is good and once tired, I was able to beach it.

Hooked several other fish that evening but all of them ran downstream and inverted jumping threw the hooks.

But I had one in the box and that is daily limit.

30 March 2012 Salmon River Pulaski NY 1 Steelhead Landed 5 Pound Female Steelhead

24 inches

After driving through Thursday night, arrived at river at 8am. Went to the water behind Stoney's and was only person on the river... not a sign of anyone.. saw 2 fish in log jam that would not be landable even  if hooked and decided to go to Altimar to see what people are doing.

Many people in Altimar area, saw people catch with stonefly nymph on fly and float.. also egg sacks on fly and float... after several hook ups but no landing, I eventually hooked and landed a 5 pound steel head. The bigger fish were running downstream after hooked and jumping... this one ran up stream and was controlled on 8lb leader taken with stone fly.

Spinning rod drifting orange salmon egg through head of pool.

Lost one at the net as guy completely messed up causing fish to freak out and snap off. 3 casts later had this perfect condition fish and after what felt like 20 minutes and 20+ jumps, the guy did a god job netting this one :-)

6 October 2010 Pulsaki NY, Salmon River 9 Salmon Kept 3 Salmon, 2 males and a female. All 3 were approx 19 pounds.

Released the other 6.

Fly rod using 30 pound leader / tippet and egg flies.

Excellent day, using 30 pound test I was able to hook and land 9 salmon.. hooked and lost many many more.

5 October 2010 Pulsaki NY, Salmon River 2 18 pound Male Salmon

27.5 pound Female Salmon

The female went upstream from weed pool to main river then took off diaganol upstream like torpedo jumping many times stripping over 100 yards of line, then held in pool on opposite bank for a few minutes before getting tired... swung her round to the grass beds on my side river and with net brought the line back onto reel and netter her.. she was just flopping in the current after 15+ minute fight.

Fly rod using 30 pound leader / tippet and egg flies

Day1. 10 pound tippet.. lost fish due to snapped line.

Day2, 12 pound tippet, lost fish due to snapped line

Day3 am, 15 pound line, lost fish due to snapped line.

Day 3 Afternoon... started landing fish with 30 pound line.

River was in record flood after 5 inch rain on 1st Oct.. normal 350 cfm, was at 22,000 cfm on 1st and 2500 cfm on 3rd. stayed at 2000 cfm remaining days which is higher water level than the spring ice melt..!! water was muddy but all fish kept were fresh only been in river a couple days.

Perfect condition fishes and incredibly strong in the main river currents.

Would have landed many many fish on day1 and 2 if had been using 30 pound tippet.

After tying over 150 flies from egg patterns to egg sucking leech and bunny leeches I set off to Fish Salmon river.

Found hard way you need to use 10 pound test or lighter as fish are very line shy.

On average, probably land one in 6 fish hooked, following them up and down the river.

Noted that a few people are into fish consistently. Some people occasionally hook into a fish. Many people don't hook up at all. I was in the first and second category until Monday where I found a technique that worked.

Saturday evening = 1 fish.

Sunday evening after fishing from 6:30 am right through to 7pm = 3 fish.

Monday was insane.. huge school of salmon passed through and hooked over 40 fish. Landed 3 and kept 2. Lost first five fish at the net..!!

Best tactic was Sight fishing in waist deep water spotting the fish then casting to them.

Awesome people at the campsite.. very friendly and great atmosphere.

Tuesday went on drift boat charter. The guide forgot his net and that didn't bode well. Had several fish hook up and landed one where another boat kindly netted the fish for us. The drift boat predominantly does reverse trolling where current causes jigs to swim and guide rows boat to slow it down in the current.

Trolling on Lake Ontario (Charter) using www.strikezonefishing.com

5 rods fishing 150-175 ft down, 2 Dipsy diver with flasher and fly. 3 downrigger with flasher and fly.

We drove out 15 miles ignoring large school of fish 5 miles from river mouth as so many people fishing and fish were no longer biting due to constant pressure. Went extra 10 miles and found area where we were marking solitary fishes around 150 ft down in 200ft water.

Downrigger had speed and water temp sensor so was able to troll in 48 degree water and at 2.8 mph

First fish hit and John took rod.. whilst clearing the lines, second fish hit and Chance took that rod. Chance brought the 30lb Salmon to boat in around 5 mins.. the 25 pound Salmon took almost 20 mins to boat as it peeled off 600 ft line and kept running every time got close to boat.

3 hours Later Mouse got a 2 pound lake trout.

Just before end of charter when we though I was not going to get any fish, with nothing on fish finder the rod went off and 5 mins later I had a 21 pound salmon on the boat.

The Salmon river fish hatchery release 2 million salmon par into the river and 1 million steel head par along with half million brown trout each year. They strip percentage of fish that return to the river to insure that the fishery is sustainable. The Salmon are 3 years old when they return to breed, then they die.
