No Fears - No Regrets

The Ultra triathlon Levis is held in french Canada, and most people speak french and poor english. But there were volunteers who were our dedicated support crew, local people who wanted to be part of the race and they did an excellent job.. very friendly and did their best to help. This race was one of the best organised events I have ever been involved in. The whole duration of the event there were smaller events running beside us, all levels of junior running and cycling and triathlon and various distance adult races from single ironman to 100KM run. This was good at keeping us motivated as 31 hours and 28 minutes is a long time without any break or sleep, and the live bands / dj was superb at shouting motivation as we completed the laps on the cycle and on foot.
The swim was in the huge river, we started at high tide and swam 4.8 miles down stream each with a dedicated canoeist in case of trouble. As the tide was going out, the current flow was very fast and it helped us enormously in the swim. Normall would take winner 2H and me approx 3H but I was out of the water just 20 mins behind the winner in 1H 50 mins. After the transition everything was fair, and we had to cycle up the hill from the river to the cycle course approx 5 miles, and then we had an undulating loop of roads approx 2 miles long which we had to cycle laps. The headwind on the uphill part was strong and the heat was up to 90 degrees as Quebec was hit by a heatwave.... but after very little training and on a new bike bought just 3 weeks earlier due to working overseas, I was happy to finish the 225 miles in 14H 49 mins in good health and no injuries but quite tired.
After a quick shower and massage I started the 52 mile run, once again it was an undulating course with one side being a climb and the other being a descent, but under normal conditions very runable and fast.
I managed to run the first 10 miles and then suffered badly with indegestion and upset stomach... after eating so much watermellon and drinking gatorade and coca cola on the cycle the transition of running did not bode well, but I continued to walk the remainder of the course to finish in 31H 28 minutes for my first ultra distance triathlon.
